Want to start a career in construction but not sure where to begin?
This free short course, delivered in partnership with the Thames Gateway project, is designed to help eligible young people prepare for work in the construction industry.
A Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card demonstrates that you have the relevant training and health and safety knowledge to work on construction sites. Many major contractors and housebuilders require workers to hold an appropriate CSCS card before allowing access to their sites.
A CSCS card can be an important first step into the construction industry. It provides employers with evidence that you have the relevant health and safety knowledge and training required to work safely on site, while also supporting your employability and future career development. As you gain further experience, training and qualifications, you can progress into skilled trades, supervision and other construction roles.
During the course, you’ll develop the essential knowledge and understanding needed to begin your journey into construction.
You’ll learn about:
- Health and safety: Understand common risks and how to work safely on site.
- Site procedures: Learn about the rules, responsibilities and expectations when working on a construction site.
- Hazard awareness: Learn how to identify potential hazards and understand how they can be controlled.
- Personal protective equipment: Understand how to use PPE correctly and why it is important.
- Emergency procedures: Learn what to do in the event of an accident, fire or other emergency.
- Construction industry awareness: Gain an understanding of the construction environment and the professional standards expected on site.
You’ll be assessed on your understanding of the key knowledge and skills covered throughout the course.
To be eligible for this free short course, you must:
- Be aged 17–24.
- Live in one of the eligible postcode areas listed below.
- Not currently be in education, employment or training.

After successful completion of the course, you can explore entry-level roles, apprenticeships and further training in the construction industry.
