Step to Success is designed for 16-18 year olds who need extra support, confidence or direction before moving on to further study, training or employment.

With three entry points throughout the year, you can join at a time that works for you. Whether you're ready for a full study programme or looking for a shorter course to help you get back into learning, Step to Success provides the support you need to move forward.

Choose the right starting point

September: 35-week Study Programme

A full academic year designed to help you develop the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress onto further study or employment.

January Start: 12-week Programme

A shorter programme that helps you rebuild confidence, improve core skills and prepare for progression later in the academic year or the following September.

May Start: 8-week Taster Programme

An introductory programme designed to re-engage you with learning, helping you build confidence and prepare for a full study programme the following academic year.

You'll focus on developing your English and maths, improving your health and wellbeing, building confidence and strengthening the personal, study and communication skills needed for your next step.

During the programme, you will:

  • Improve your English and maths skills
  • Build confidence and independence
  • Develop communication and teamwork skills
  • Focus on your health and wellbeing
  • Set personal goals and create a plan for your future
  • Explore progression opportunities and career pathways
  • Take part in enrichment and community-based activities

There are no specific entry requirements for this programme. All we ask is that you have a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and develop.

Step to Success is designed as a stepping stone to your future. Depending on when you join, you'll be supported to progress onto a full-time course at Barking & Dagenham College, continue into further education or training or explore employment opportunities with support from our Careers Team.

Where it can lead to
Career progression

There are number of routes you can take following successful completion of a course. Further study can include Higher Education courses or a Higher Apprenticeship where you will expand your skills through study whilst earning a wage. Or you may choose to move directly into employment.
