The Building Services Engineering Apprenticeship is a practical, work-based programme designed to give you the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to start a career in building services.

You will gain real workplace experience alongside structured off-the-job learning, while also developing your English and maths.

Building Service Engineering focuses on low carbon heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, heat pumps and plumbing systems. These systems are essential in keeping domestic, commercial and industrial buildings such as schools, hospitals, factories and offices safe, comfortable and energy efficient.

As an apprentice, you will support the planning and completion of maintenance activities on building service systems. Your daily duties will vary depending on your workplace, and you will work alongside engineers, team members and site managers to help keep buildings operating effectively.

You will develop an understanding of how building service systems work and how to maintain them safely and effectively. This includes:

  • Health, safety and environmental responsibilities

  • Sustainability and waste management

  • The use of tools, equipment and personal protective equipment

  • Basic electrical and control systems

  • Materials and components used in building service engineering

  • Carrying out simple maintenance tasks and system checks

Alongside technical training, you will build essential workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, professionalism, timekeeping and adapting to challenges. You will also learn about customer service, inclusion, and maintaining your own health and wellbeing at work.

You will be assessed through a combination of practical observation in the workplace and off-the-job learning activities. This will include demonstrating your skills on site, completing relevant coursework or knowledge tasks, and showing that you meet the required technical and employability standards.

Your progress will be reviewed regularly to ensure you are developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to successfully complete the apprenticeship.

You will need to have a level 1 equivalent in maths and English.

On successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will be equipped with the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to progress within the building services sector.

You may move directly into employment or continue your training through further study. Typical progression routes include:

  • Level 2 Property Maintenance

  • Level 3 Plumbing

  • Level 3 Gas Engineering

This apprenticeship provides a strong foundation for a long term career in the construction and low carbon building services industry.
