The Level 2 City and Guilds Certificate in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles is designed to help you develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to work in the automotive service and repair industry.
You’ll gain hands-on workshop experience while building a strong understanding of how vehicles are maintained and repaired, giving you confidence as you prepare for your next step in the motor industry.
This course offers a strong progression route into Level 3, as the units you complete make up half of the units within the Level 3 Diploma. You’ll also develop awareness of electric vehicles through an optional unit, helping you understand modern vehicle technology.
On this course, you’ll develop the underpinning knowledge and practical skills required to work in an automotive workshop environment. You’ll learn how to work safely and maintain good housekeeping standards, as well as how to correctly use tools, equipment, materials and measuring devices.
You’ll gain experience in routine light vehicle maintenance, the removal and replacement of engine, electrical, chassis and driveline components, and the inspection of vehicles using prescribed methods. You’ll also develop effective communication and customer service skills.
Key vehicle systems covered include engines, fuel, ignition, air and exhaust systems, transmission, steering and suspension. An optional unit introduces you to electric vehicle safety.
Course units
You’ll study the following mandatory units:
- Skills in Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
- Skills in Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices in the Automotive Environment
- Knowledge of Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
- Knowledge of Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices Used in the Automotive Environment
- Skills in Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance
- Knowledge of Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance
You’ll also complete one optional group made up of two or three units.
You’ll be assessed through a combination of exams and internal assessments.
You will need to have GCSE Maths, English Language and two additional subjects at grade 3 (D) or above.

When you successfully complete the course, you’ll be well prepared to progress within the automotive industry. You can move on to the Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles or progress into Level 2 or Level 3 competence-based vocational qualifications through an apprenticeship.
The course can also support entry into employment within the motor vehicle industry and provide progression into further training in electric vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems.
