The Level 3 City and Guilds Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles is designed to help you take the next step in your automotive career.

This course builds on your existing knowledge and skills, developing advanced diagnostic and repair abilities across all key vehicle systems.

You’ll benefit from future-focused learning through optional electric vehicle and advanced driver assistance systems units, helping you prepare for modern and emerging technologies. The course offers seamless progression into skilled employment, apprenticeships and Level 3 or Level 4 specialist routes within the automotive industry.

On this course, you’ll develop advanced knowledge and practical skills required for progression within the automotive service and repair industry. You’ll continue to build your understanding of health, safety and good housekeeping, alongside effective communication and customer service skills needed in a professional workshop environment.

You’ll learn how to use materials, tools and measuring equipment accurately and safely, and you’ll focus on diagnosing and rectifying faults in a wide range of light vehicle systems. This includes combustion engines, chassis systems, transmission, driveline and auxiliary electrical systems, supported by systematic vehicle inspection techniques.

Optional units allow you to specialise further, with opportunities to develop skills in engine, transmission, steering and suspension overhaul, as well as emerging technologies such as electric vehicle high-voltage systems and advanced driver assistance systems.

  • Knowledge of Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices Used in the Automotive Environment

  • Skills in Diagnosing and Rectifying Light Vehicle Combustion Engine Faults

  • Skills in Diagnosing and Rectifying Light Vehicle Chassis System Faults

  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Combustion Engine Faults

  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Chassis Faults

  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline Faults

  • Skills in Diagnosing and Rectifying Automotive Vehicle Auxiliary Electrical Faults

  • Knowledge of Diagnosis and Rectification of Vehicle Auxiliary Electrical Faults

  • Knowledge of Carrying Out Non-High Voltage Operations On, Near or With an Electric Vehicle

You’ll be assessed through a combination of exams and internally assessed practical work.

On successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma, you’ll have the technical knowledge and diagnostic skills needed for employment as a light vehicle technician. The qualification also supports progression into apprenticeships, competence-based vocational qualifications, and further specialist training in electric, hybrid and advanced driver assistance systems.
