The Level 3 Applied Science qualification (Pearson AAQ) is studied in Year 1 of a two-year study programme and is equivalent in size to one A level.
This course is designed to build a strong scientific foundation and prepare you for progression into further specialist study.
On successful completion of Year 1, you’ll be able to progress into Year 2 and specialise in a medical or biomedical science pathway.
On this course, you’ll develop essential scientific knowledge and practical skills through a range of mandatory units. You’ll study fundamental scientific principles across biology, chemistry and physics, and learn how these are applied in real-world contexts.
You’ll develop laboratory skills, including health and safety assessment and professional scientific practice. You’ll also build transferable skills such as problem solving, teamwork and analytical thinking, which are valued in further study and employment.
Assessment includes a mixture of externally and internally assessed units.
Three units are externally assessed through dated exams, and three units are assessed internally through coursework.
To apply for this course, you’ll need GCSE grade 4 in English and maths, and grade 4 or 5 in science.
This qualification forms part of a two-year study programme and can be combined with a medical science pathway in Year 2. On completion, you’ll be able to progress into higher education, an apprenticeship or entry-level employment.
