A 19 year old student chef from Romford has landed a job at The Hilton Hotel in Canary Wharf.
Angelika Toporowska is originally from Poland and didn’t speak much English when she first enrolled at Barking & Dagenham College 4 years ago.
After successfully learning English on the College’s English for Speakers of Other Languages course, Angelika enrolled on a hospitality and catering course at the College’s Technical Skills Academy in Barking.
No sooner had she completed her course, than she landed herself a full-time job as a commis chef.
Her tutors had arranged a visit to The Hilton Canary Wharf earlier this year, which involved the students working in the kitchen for an hour or so and then having lunch with the chef; Chef Anton offered his business card to the students, telling them that they should get in touch if they wanted work experience; keen Angelika jumped at the opportunity and emailed him later on her own initiative. After doing the work experience, she was offered the full-time position.
Her tutor Drew Chipps explains:
Angelika has been taken under Chef Anton’s wing and this is a fabulous opportunity to learn and gain a fully-rounded experience in a professional kitchen. Also, as she’s gained a job with a large international hotel chain, the World really is her oyster!
