This qualification is designed for individuals working, or aiming to work in the gas engineering sector.

It provides both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to install, commission, maintain and safely handle domestic and small commercial gas systems.

Start dates are flexible, allowing learners to begin their Apprenticeship at a time that suits them.

Structure & Units

The qualification comprises of a series of mandatory and elective units, covering the core principles and practical skills required by the industry.

Mandatory Units:

  • Health and Safety in Gas Utilisation
  • Scientific Principles in Gas Utilisation
  • Combustion and Properties of Gas
  • Buildings, Services and Structures
  • Gas Safety Principles
  • Specific Core Installation and Maintenance

Practical activities including tightness testing, commissioning/decommissioning pipework, and installation/maintenance of domestic cookers, water heaters, and space heating appliances.

Optional Units:

  • Central Heating Systems
  • Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and Byelaws

For this Apprenticeship, you will need to have GCSEs in Maths and English at Grade 4 (C) or above. You will also need to be employed in a relevant role before starting this Apprenticeship.

  • You should be able to work at Level 2 in English, Maths and ICT (or equivalent)
  • Initial assessments in literacy, numeracy and technical aptitude are conducted before enrolment
  • Entry is subject to an interview with the candidate and employer to confirm suitability and course expectations

You can progress into jobs such as gas installation, heating work, maintenance, servicing and emergency response. With Gas Safe registration, you can also become self-employed. You can study further, move into supervisor or manager roles, take higher Apprenticeships or degree-level courses, and gain additional Gas Safe qualifications for commercial or industrial work.
