Shannon Broder Film and media student asked Idris Elba questions in a QA session

"My tutor was so supportive to me and my classmates; she was our ‘go to’ person and never let us down."

Shannon turns 18 on BTEC Results Day and she’s hoping she’ll have more than just her birthday to celebrate!

She’s expecting to receive a Distinction in her Media Production BTEC and is full of praise for the course and her tutors.

As a student, Shannon had access to the state-of-the-art Idris Elba Film and TV Studio and even met the man himself when he visited in June.

“My tutor was so supportive to me and my classmates; she was our ‘go to’ person and never let us down,” she says.

Shannon found the course interactive and inspiring, with hands-on experiences and lots of opportunities to work creatively with others.

“The highlight of my BTEC was the showcases we did at the end of each year. It was so much fun - we all sat down and watched each other’s work.”

One of her favourite projects was a group music video exploring the troubled teen industry in America - focusing on controversial camps where young people are sent for behavioural reform.

She also gained invaluable experience working on real-world projects. During her course, she spent two weeks as a social media manager in Lisbon and got involved in interviews at college, including filming a local council leader and stepping up as floor manager in the studio.

Shannon is now preparing to start an English Language degree at the University of Greenwich and believes that doing a BTEC was the perfect stepping stone.

“A BTEC is genuinely one of the best things you can do.”
