BDC is dedicated to preparing students for their future careers by focusing on confidence, personal development and real-world skills, beyond academic qualifications.
Work experience is key to helping young people understand the workplace, build essential skills and make informed career choices.
This guidance supports parents/carers in ensuring students gain the most from their placements. We aim to ensure that students spend time in a real-life working environment that relates to their course. We will support students in sourcing quality placement opportunities with employers that match their career aspirations.
Benefits of Work Experience
• Putting classroom-based learning into practice
• Developing and applying technical and practical skills
• Real life experience of the workplace
• Being able to make informed decisions about career options
• Gaining the transferable skills that their future employers are looking for in an employee
Some students have secured jobs or Apprenticeships directly through their work experience placements.
Learners are expected to find their own placement and will be given the necessary support and documentation to confidently approach employers. Searching for a work experience placement can be a valuable learning experience and help build confidence. All placements must meet safety standards, last at least 36 hours and comply with safeguarding procedures, with part-time work possibly counting as experience.
How Can You Help Secure a Work Placement?
• Help research placements that match their interests
• Assist with CVs, cover letters and interview practice
• Look for placement opportunities in your own workplace
• Talk to family or friends about possible placement opportunities
• Support them during the placement, ensuring professionalism and punctuality
• Encourage them to reflect on their experience with their Progression Officer
