Young entrepreneurs come up with winning business ideas

24th November 2016

Barking & Dagenham College students have won two awards for their business ideas in a competition run by Your Horizon.

The business students were competing against a number of other London colleges as part of a workshop held at the Old Mutual Bank, designed to help them develop their ideas. The students worked in teams and clearly impressed the judges and walked away with two awards - ‘Best Marketing Campaign’ and ‘Best Team’.

The Best Marketing Campaign award was presented to Josie Maybanks, Jack White, Akville Pociute, Meda Staneviciute, Chloe Dillaway, and Ajeesh Gangadharan who together presented their business idea, Shake ‘n Move. Shake ‘n Move is a portable smoothie bar. The idea caught the judges’ attention through an innovative jingle and their plans on using social media to reach their audience.

The Best Team award was given to Kristupas Andziukevicius, Tom Akinade, Kurolis Kuisys, Sirajudin Sufi Mustafa and Ahmed Moez. They presented their idea, Platinum Gym, which provides a personalised service to its members. They won the award, having delegated their roles based on their individual skills, something that the judges appreciated.

David Garrick, Your Horizon Senior Project Manager and was on the panel was impressed: “The Small Business Challenge workshop at Old Mutual Wealth proved to be very successful for students studying at Barking and Dagenham College. Team Shake’n’Move really marketed themselves well in their pitch delivery so that they deserved to scoop a Young Enterprise Marketing award. The judges also particularly liked the teamwork approach of team Platinum. Each member played their part in the pitch delivery, from wearing the T-shirt logo, to talking us through their gym offers. They were worthy winners of the Team Award. All in all, the workshop proved to be a great start to their entrepreneurial journeys.”
