Barking & Dagenham College students are designing original artwork postcards for charity in a new annual fundraising event called Post-Picasso.
Using any creative medium, such as photography, illustration, painting, moving images and textiles, approximately 200 students will be coming up with unique postcard designs, which will go up for sale in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society.
The new fundraising event, which gives a nod to Picasso, who is often credited as one of the founders of mixed media work, has been entirely organised by the College’s photography students, as part of the course.
The idea has come from the Royal College of Arts world-famous ‘Secret’ fundraising exhibition, which involves famous celebrities and artists designing postcards which are sold for charity, without the buyers knowing who designed them until they’ve bought it. In a similar way, students will write their name on the back of the postcard, which will not be revealed until a member of the public has bought it.
All the postcards will be on display in The Gallery at Barking & Dagenham College, Dagenham Road from 6th - 10th March. Members of the public are invited to view and buy the postcards throughout this time. The postcards are available at £5 each or three postcards for £10. The postcards will also be available to view and buy online during the same week, at www.postpicasso.tumblr.com.
The opening reception will be held on Monday 6th March 6pm-8.30pm and all are welcome to attend.
David Bennett, Programme Leader for photography at Barking & Dagenham College helped the students to organise the event said: “This event has provided students with the experience of producing art that can contribute to a good cause. The BTEC Level 3 2nd Year Photography students have coordinated the event with me as part of their assignment on making mixed-media work and fundraising in fine-art. These important skills will be relevant to them throughout their careers. This will also be the very first-time students across all creative courses have come together in one room to display work. I am very proud of what all students have achieved.”
