Money superheroes

Students got ‘superhero’ work experience, helping out at a big event aimed at teaching children to be good with money.

Hundreds of children from primary and secondary schools from across London competed in the Money Wise Challenge at ExCeL London. The competition teaches youngsters essential financial skills and is the brainchild of innovative ethical gaming start-up Dot Dot Fire, an educational video game developer.

Students and alumni from Barking & Dagenham College were invited by the company to be actors at the event – money superheroes and baddies. They were tasked with staying in character throughout the day as they interacted with schools, children and their teachers.

Their work also involved being the event’s invigilators, ushering the hundreds of students, teachers and guests into ExCeL, monitoring students and providing technical support on the day.

Katie Brett, a Barking & Dagenham College alumnae, was a student volunteer last year and this year was employed by the company to help support the event. Katie said: “After graduation I kept in contact with the Dot Dot Fire team, they reached out to me to offer me a production role contract to help support the Moneywise event.

“Dot Dot Fire are an amazing brand to work with and I really respect their mission, the team are lovely and the opportunity has given me so much experience and is great for my portfolio.”

Sabrina Au, Chief Partnerships Officer at Dot Dot Fire, highlighted the unique impact of this initiative: “No child likes talking about money, but every child loves playing games. The Money Wise Challenge is a game-changer in teaching financial education and unlike anything else out there. We’re giving young people a head start in life through engaging and memorable education. The life skills they learn at this event will stay with them for a lifetime.”
