Everyone’s talking apprenticeships!

15th February 2021

Barking & Dagenham College students got the chance to learn all about apprenticeships last week.

The College hosted a number of online events with employers, tutors and current apprentices.

There were webinars on what apprenticeships are and what types are available, as well as opportunities to join in on live question and answer sessions with local employers.

‘Ask An Employer’ sessions saw industry experts share their experiences about apprenticeships and what they were looking for when they are hiring an apprentice. They included talks from companies such as Newham Council, the McLaren Group and the MET Police.

‘Ask An Apprentice’ sessions also gave students the opportunity to find out anything they wanted to know from current apprentices. This included a talk from Administration Apprentice Harry Gilham who said: “I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship and like the different elements of it. The learning side where you do your coursework and the fact you’re also doing full time work and getting that experience. I’ve already picked up a lot of skills on the way, so you really do get a lot out of apprenticeships. I would definitely suggest people look into what apprenticeships can offer them.”

Richard Roberts, Head of Apprenticeships at the College said: “This week has been fantastic. We’ve had live webinars every day and the interactive element has enabled participants to fully understand the value and benefits of apprenticeships and our offer at the College. We included sessions focussing on Higher Level apprenticeships and why these are growing in popularity due to their recognition in industry, and traineeships which are a stepping stone into apprenticeships with new courses at the College starting in March. The week has also given us the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our high number of successful apprentices over the last 12 months. It’s been great.”

All webinar videos will be on the College’s website with subtitle options for anyone interested in apprenticeships to find out more.
