Barking & Dagenham College student Carlo Negro, 25 from East London, has been highly commended at the national Starpack Awards in a ceremony held at the National Space Centre in Leicester.
The annual Starpack competition challenges students across the country to come up with solutions to problems set by brand-leading companies, design agencies and manufacturers.
Carlo, who is studying for his Foundation Degree in 3D Design at the College, won the honour after designing innovative packaging for a Grow Your Own Culinary Herb Kit.
Having previously worked as an engineering designer in Italy, Carlo moved to London in 2012 and enrolled on the College course from there. He said:
“I’m really enjoying the course as it’s a perfect balance of the artistic side of design and the business side too.”
The judges commented that Carlo’s work involved clever construction, which included a ‘hanging’ concept, which the judges particularly praised.
Having won the award, Carlo now has his sights set on running his own product design business. He adds:
“It’s great to be highly commended in my very first competition. I think I will enter again next year!”
