BDC welcomed representatives from Vistry Group for a hands-on Trades Career Masterclass.
The masterclass gave students an in-depth insight into real-world careers in construction.
The event, held at the College, formed part of an ongoing partnership between the College and the team behind the Beam Park development - a major regeneration project in the local area which is being delivered by Vistry Group and L&Q. Representatives from Vistry delivered a detailed presentation covering:
• An overview of the company and the Beam Park development
• Career pathways, roles, and recruitment processes
• Insights into the construction industry, including competition, employer expectations, and interview tips
• Specific opportunities available at the Beam Park site
Following the formal session, students had the opportunity to take part in a dynamic Q&A and then speak directly with professionals from a range of trades, including representatives from Colne Valley Electrical, Colne Valley Mechanical, and PGM Carpentry. These interactive stations allowed students to ask questions specific to their trade interests and explore real-world opportunities relevant to their career goals.
This type of engagement is invaluable for our learners,” said Zoe Richardson, Skills Events & Development Manager, Barking & Dagenham College, “Meeting professionals from the industry, hearing about actual roles, and understanding employer expectations bridges the gap between education and employment.”

The College hopes to follow this masterclass with a site visit to Beam Park in the coming months, giving students even greater insight into what a live construction environment looks like.
