Orlando came to the UK 4 years ago at 16 years old, to pursue his passion in science.
Barking & Dagenham College gave Orlando the opportunity to study Applied Science and it was a great step for him. After arriving in the UK at 16 years old, Orlando started entry level functional skills, studied for his GCSE’s and then moved his way up the levels. Science is a passion for Orlando, and he has worked very hard to get to where he is now.
“I’ve had great support from my tutors. They’ve not only taught me in the classroom but life skills too, like the value of setting goals and how I can achieve them. This has been important for me. Their words and guidance have fuelled me to keep focused on what I want to do as a career and what will be expected of me in university and in industry”.
Orlando loves all 3 areas of science, but biology is his favourite. He has learnt many skills in his course, including examining blood and food testing for alcohol and vitamins. His next step is university. He has received an offer for Greenwich University, where he will study nursing. His dream is to then get a job in the NHS after graduating.
Orlando has had a great experience studying at Barking and Dagenham College and says:
“When I first came to the UK, I didn’t know any English and I was very shy and lacked social skills because of this. From the beginning, I’ve always received support from the college and my teachers. My teachers have always pushed me to have ambition and to make something of my career, which I highly appreciate”.
