Fiona, Science BTEC

"Ever since I started the BTEC, I've wanted to be a nurse; patient care really excites me."

Fiona aims to progress to study Adult Nursing at the University of Surrey, having developed a strong passion for healthcare during her BTEC.

Hands-on learning plays a big part in the course and students regularly carry out practical experiments as part of their studies.

Work experience opportunities help students build valuable skills and gain insight into real working environments. Fiona gained experience as a lab technician in the college’s own lab, supporting other classes and discovering more about what happens behind the scenes.

The course also offers exciting extracurricular experiences. Fiona took part in the Inter College Skills Show - a major competition involving colleges from across London.

“It was so much fun!” she says.

Support is a key part of the learning journey. Fiona reflects on the help available during her studies. “The teachers gave us loads of feedback, help and extra revision sessions before our exams.”

Fiona recommends the BTEC route to anyone interested in a practical, supportive pathway into a caring profession.

"The practical's were definitely the highlight - we got to do so many hands-on experiments."
