The Great British cake off

5th October 2017

The Technical Skills Academy students took part in the free workshop organised by YourFeed, an organisation that is on a mission to connect 2 million young people to opportunities

Industry experts John Holland aka Baker On Board (@BakerOnBoardUK) and Kyndra Vorster (@KyndraV) gave the students a patisserie masterclass. They were given a brief and then students set to work on their creations prior to the afternoon judging session.

After much eating and deliberation they chose winners based on hitting the brief, scalability and taste. Team 1 was victorious which consisted of Ben Carroll aged 17 from Dagenham, Angelika Toporowska aged 19 from Romford and Aidan Coyle aged 19 from Dagenham.

‘Baker On Board’ John commented: “The challenge presented several opportunities for the students to be creative, understand corporate hospitality and recognise how to feed people on a big scale! The cakes presented were all very different, but the characters of each team were definitely in there.

“The winners gave us a yummy multipurpose chocolate recipe, which delivered the flavour we were looking for, in combination with a lovely white chocolate and fruit topping, carefully chosen to tie-in across the large and small cakes.”

“I have absolutely no doubt that most of these great students will go on into the industry in some way and I was very pleased to see their individual and team progressions through the day. Thank you for welcoming me and all the very best for the future.”

The winning team will get the opportunity to bake the launch cakes at Your Feed UK public launch on November 30th, which means exposure to huge brands attending the event and the chance to deliver an actual business brief.
