Students serve food to the homeless

13th June 2016

Catering students from at Barking & Dagenham College?s Technical Skills Academy have been helping serving hot meals to the homeless. The second year catering students and their lecturer Lynden Davies volunteered at the Salvation Army in Barking, which hosts a food bank.

They cooked a meal of sausage and mash with a ‘herby’ onion and mushroom sauce, which was packaged and served at lunchtime to 55 homeless people. The food is donated by Costco in Chingford and Lakeside.

The students were humbled by the experience; many said they would return to help when not at college.

Major Nigel Schultz of the Salvation Army commented

“The young people were brilliant and were a credit to Barking & Dagenham College. Well done!”

It is planned that students will continue to help out at the Salvation Army on Fridays from now on.
