Students hold a ?bake off? in aid off Macmillan

1st October 2018

Barking & Dagenham College students raised £250 for Macmillan Cancer Support through a bake off competition, bake sale and collection last Friday.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning which was held on Friday 28th September is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. They ask people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan.

Students approached staff and other students in the college to bake a cake at home to bring in for judging.

Assistant Principal Ann McDaniel and her colleague Clare Warren became Prue Leith and Mary Berry to judge the cakes on presentation and quality of bake and flavour.

The competition was won by staff member Barb Owen, who made a fantastic lemon drizzle cake.

The students worked together to plan the event, making decorations, organising a range of sweet treats, both homemade and bought. On the day they divided into two teams to maximize opportunity to raise money.

The students’ Personal coach Louise Clarke said:

From carrying out the event students said they learned how to work together and felt proud of their achievements. They also said that were pleasantly surprised by the generosity of the people who donated and were also pleased that many fellow students and staff members took the opportunity to share how cancer had touched their lives.
