Students at WorldSkills Competition 2015

Barking & Dagenham's students placed fourth in the WorldSkills competition hosted at South Thames College.

"Excellent performance"

Seven of Barking & Dagenham’s students took part in the WorldSkills 2015 Popular Music Competition held at South Thames College last week.

Beginning in April, the WorldSkills UK national competition sees colleges throughout the UK and these competitions are held in a variety of areas from construction to beauty. Students are able to demonstrate their excellence in each chosen trade.

The band titled, ‘’BDC Live’’, performed two numbers including Michael Jackson’s “The way you make me feel”, and Linkin Park’s “Numb”. They placed 4th out of 12 acts.

“It was an excellent performance.”

Said tutor Del Harrison. Del was also the mentor for former student Emmanuel Nwamadi, the runner-up for The Voice in 2015.

Dedicated muscians

Among the seven students, Jennifer Guimares, Molly Lines, and Kevin Christ Mambuini participated in vocals. Student, Conway Kesler, was the lead guitarist and student, Nathaniel Mutombo, performed the drums. Wilson Mutumbu and Youri Nganseu contributed on keyboard and piano. The students are all on the BTEC Diploma in Music at Level 3 (year 1) at our School for the Performing Arts & Technical Theatre.

‘’The students came together to form the band just for this competition but they are planning to stay together and work on their act.’’

Harrison adds,

“They were very professional and were a credit to the College.”
