Joint venture to upskill our communities in food and hospitality

7th September 2023

We are excited to announce a joint venture at our Barking Campus to upskill our communities in food and hospitality.

In collaboration with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, we are excited to announce a joint venture at our Barking Campus to upskill our communities in food and hospitality.

The City of London’s historic wholesale food markets are planned to relocate to Barking and Dagenham from 2027. To ensure our communities, businesses, and the wider hospitality and food sector benefit from this major development, we are building long lasting partnerships that drive success.

Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, Cllr Darren Rodwell, said: “The new food venture is in the early stages of development – but our vision is to create a food offer that places London above Paris, New York and Singapore for the diversity and sustainability of its cuisine.”

At Barking and Dagenham College, we can’t wait to share the wider plans for this venture and the positive impact it will have on our communities and their routes to employment and successful careers. In a first for the hospitality and food industry, we plan to collaborate with our borough leaders, employers in the sector and the market traders to design training and meaningful activity, to create a pipeline of talent for businesses. Working with the local schools and our community, we will energise our borough in and around food, impacting positively on their health, employment, and education.

Jason Turton, Deputy Principal for Curriculum and Quality said: "We are exhilarated by the prospect of the City of London's historic wholesale food markets relocating to our borough. Our vision extends beyond education and training; it's about exciting the community around food, to enhance health, employment, and overall quality of life. This is an unparalleled opportunity to not only elevate the culinary standing of London but also to foster meaningful, long-term community impact.”
