Becontree estate showcased in photography exhibition

20th June 2016

A photography exhibition documenting life on the Becontree estate has gone on show at The Broadway Theatre in Barking until Thursday 14 July. Admission is free and open Monday - Saturday, 10am - 5pm.

The exhibition, entitled 'Banjo' recalling the physical shape of a cul-de-sac, showcases the work by students on the Foundation Degree (FdA) in Photography.

David Bennett, Photography course leader, sets the scene for the exhibition,

“It’s quite easy to put negative connotations onto the estate, but this exhibition doesn’t,” he said.

“It’s more about how the area has changed and what’s come into the area.”

“Two of my students live on the estate but don’t realise they live on an estate at all – it’s just a house on a street to them. There’s a lot of history behind it but people just drive through.”

Photography student, Igor Tanko, talks about his inspiration for the exhibition (one of his images is pictured above),

“I looked at the architecture on the estate and the part it plays in creating the community and the relationship between the buildings and spaces. I was particularly interested in the churches.”

“This exhibition is a great way to end my first year. David Bennett is a great teacher, and I would recommend the course.”
