“It’s not the easy route – just a different one that helps you grow in every way.”
Maria chose to study Applied Science through a BTEC because she was looking for more than just theory. She wanted a practical, engaging course that connected learning to the real world.
“The BTEC gave me the chance to do hands-on experiments, apply my lab skills and learn through real-world scenarios - not just textbooks.”
Taking part in Skills Shows and inter-college competitions helped her grow her confidence and pushed her beyond her comfort zone. “Winning one of the Skills Shows was a major highlight. It showed me just how far I could go with hard work and determination.”
She also got involved in subject-specific experiences, like a Biomedical Science Subject Spotlight, which offered insight into what a career in science could look like. “Applying lab skills, interpreting data and presenting findings - it felt like we were doing the real thing. It confirmed that this is the kind of work I want to do.”
Maria was inspired by supportive tutors who believed in her and encouraged her to push herself. Over time, her self-belief and ambition grew with every challenge she met.
Now, Maria is progressing to study Criminology at university, where she plans to continue developing her skills and make a meaningful impact. “The BTEC gave me confidence, experience and clarity about the future I want.”
Her advice?
“Go for it - especially if you prefer practical learning. BTECs are challenging, rewarding and full of real-world opportunities.”
