Valentine?s day inspires competition

9th February 2015

Students at Barking & Dagenham College?s Technical Skills Academy used Valentine?s Day as their inspiration this week, when they took part in a hair and beauty competition at the Academy.

With a hairdressing student and a beauty therapy student in each team, they had two hours to create some fantastic ‘hair-up’ romantic looks using blocks (model hairdressing heads). The tutors then picked the three best looks to be developed on models.

Romantic ‘hair-up’ looks can be found from as far back as Edwardian and Victorian times, and the students took this inspiration to create their own modern day versions. Loose waves and soft chignons were swiftly created and adorned with roses, hearts and diamante accessories by the winning hairdressing students, whilst the beauty therapy trainees created soft, romance inspired make-up looks.

Their tutor at the Technical Skills Academy, Shannon Bridgeman said:

“The styles that the students created were fantastic. The winning students needed to be able to keep calm under pressure and work well in challenging situations. It was also a chance to let their creative flair shine and the results speak for themselves – they look beautiful.”

Next Technical Skills Academy Open Event: Thursday 12 February, 4.30-7pm.
