Kiera Baker-Heffernan gained confidence and remarkable growth after enrolling in the Employability Course at Barking & Dagenham College.
When Kiera first joined, she arrived with a quiet presence and gentle determination. Living with a learning difficulty, social and emotional challenges, and autism spectrum disorder, new environments could feel overwhelming, and group activities were intimidating.
However, it quickly became clear that Kiera had a strong work ethic and a genuine desire to learn. With patient guidance, a supportive learning environment, and the freedom to work at her own pace, she gradually began to come out of her shell.
Week by week, Kiera’s confidence has grown. She now participates actively in tutorials, asks thoughtful questions, and applies her learning with increasing independence. Her classmates quickly recognised her creativity and kindness, and she has become a valued member of the group.

A standout moment came when Kiera baked a Christmas cake for her classmates. She completed the task with exceptional attention to detail, creating a beautifully decorated cake that showcased both her talent and growing self-assurance. Sharing it with the class was a proud achievement, and her smile said it all.
Kiera’s Support and Achievement Mentor Georgie Hutton said,
I am incredibly proud of Kiera’s progress and excited to see where her skills and confidence take her next, both here and at Barking & Dagenham College.
Kiera’s journey is a shining example of how determination, support, and a nurturing learning environment can empower learners to achieve their potential.
