Adult 19+

Do you enjoy reading and look forward to picking up your next novel?

Whether it's the thriller, horror, romance or sci-fi genre that captures your attention, as part of this informal reading group you'll develop further appreciation for reading and be able to join in discussions with other readers.

You'll deepen your understanding of content, plot, narrative and a range of literary devices used in fiction, and have the opportunity for social discussion in a relaxed atmosphere.

You'll learn about a range of literary devices used in fiction through reading and discussing books such as:

  • Fresh Ink by Lamar Giles
  • Kim Jiyoung, born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo
  • Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evanisto
  • The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
  • Internment by Samira Ahmed
  • The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
  • The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

These literary devices include:

  • Imagery
  • Symbolism
  • Flashbacks
  • Foreshadowing
  • Point of view
  • Satire
  • Irony
  • Simile
  • Metaphor

You'll learn how to interpret and offer a personal response to books, whilst developing confidence in using speaking and listening skills in discussions.

There are no specific entry requirements to join this reading group. You'll just need to be an adult over the age of 19 and have a keen interest in books and reading.

After participating in this reading group you'll have developed a further appreciation for books and be able to discuss the content, plot and literacy devices used in more depth.

If you're joining the reading group for your own personal interest in literature, you'll be able to apply these new skills when you pick up your next book. Alternatively, you could progress to study English Literature or English Language at a higher level.
