This qualification is designed to give learners the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as self-employed counsellors in independent practice.
It also equips learners to take on a senior counselling role in an organisational context where client assessment, referral and routine evaluation are part of the role.
You'll learn how to work as a Counsellor in a post-pandemic world. The course covers a combination of theory and work-based practice, covering the following:
- Work safely, legally and ethically as an independent counsellor
- Work with complex aspects of the counselling relationship
- Use theory and research to work with client diversity in independent practice
- Use a coherent approach to respond to the needs of individual clients
- Work with self-awareness as an independent practitioner
- Use theory, research and skills within a coherent framework for independent counselling practice
- Monitor and maintain professional effectiveness as a counsellor in independent practice
Case Review – externally assessed.
All other work internally assessed/externally verified. You will build a portfolio of work throughout the academic year, which is then assessed to ensure you are proficient alongside the eternal assessment of a case study.
Entry onto this programme is for students who have successfully completed the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, who have completed the 100+ voluntary counselling hours in an agency setting and who have been in personal therapy throughout the course.

You'll need to complete a mandatory work placement/employment component.
This qualification will enable you to work in private practice as a counsellor or as a senior counsellor, within an agency setting. You can work towards the experience needed to start the Level 6 supervision course, which on completion, will enable you to supervise other counsellors.
