On this 1-year course you'll begin to develop advanced scientific technical skills in a range of science subject areas.

As part of the course you'll gain 35-40 hours of relevant work experience, which will prepare you for the world of work. You may already have an idea of where you'd like to complete your placement, but we can also support you to find exciting work experience opportunities.

Once you've successfully completed this course you'll be able to progress to the second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Science, where you can continue to develop the knowledge and skills needed to take the next step in your career.

As part of this course you'll study units including:

  • Principles and Applications of Science
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Lab Techniques
  • Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways
  • Diseases and Infections

You will complete coursework, assignments and external exams.

You must have 5 GCSEs including Maths, English and Science plus one other subject at grade 4 or above to join the course .

After successful completion of this course you can progress to Year 2 of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science. From there you can progress to an apprenticeship, employment or degree-level study.

Career progression

There are number of routes you can take following successful completion of a course. Further study can include Higher Education courses or a Higher Apprenticeship where you will expand your skills through study whilst earning a wage. Or you may choose to move directly into employment.
