Frequently Asked Questions for Students and Parents

All students should check their college email regularly for updates and important information.

Attendance at College

  • When will BDC campuses re-open for students?
Following further Government guidance updated on 4 January 2021, further education colleges are to deliver remote online learning until February half term.
  • I am experiencing difficulties with remote online learning. Is there assistance for me?
If you are experiencing difficulties or are unable to access learning from home, feel isolated or need support, we have a range of facilities available to support you. Please contact your tutor in the first.
  • Will I be marked absent if I am studying remotely?
No. We have new register marks for Covid-related absences, which show whether you have logged into a Google Classroom lesson or if you are completing other work set by your teacher. In this way, your attendance level will not be affected.

  • I have a BTEC exam in January. What should I do?
Currently, DfE guidance confirms that January exams should proceed as planned. Please ensure you attend at the times you are registered for and bring your own pens, calculators and any other resources that you will need to complete the exam.

If you have symptoms of ill health or suspect you may have coronavirus or if someone in your household has coronavirus, please do not come to college and contact your tutor.
  • What Covid-safety measures are in place for exams?
We have timetabled exams carefully with our COVID safety teams to ensure numbers are spread over the exam period so that students are at a safe number to allow for social distancing.

All the usual safety measures remain in place, please make sure you put your face covering, display your ID badge on before entering the college, use the hand sanitisers available at the entrance and in common areas (combined with regular hand washing) and maintain social distancing.
  • I have a BTEC exam but I am ill or isolating
If you cannot attend your exam because you are ill or isolating, you must email your tutor from your student email account advising them of your situation.
  • Will summer exams go ahead?
Currently, all summer exams are under review by the DfE, Ofqual and awarding bodies. Once guidance is provided on the status of summer exams, we will communicate all effected students accordingly.

Accessing College Systems from Home

  • What if I forget my password?
If you have forgotten your password to access remote online learning, contact your tutor who will assist in resetting your password. You will then receive a system generated email with your temporary password and access.
  • I do not have access to a laptop. What support is available for me?
Since March 2020, the college has done everything we can to support our most vulnerable and students in need. We have a range of options to provide you with support to ensure your learning continues. Please email or contact your tutor who can assist you in this process to request support.

COVID-19 Testing

  • Will there be testing for students and staff at college?
BDC will be participating in rapid testing and we are implementing this for all students and staff attending their lessons at the college. More information and details will be provided as soon as possible.

In preparation for this and to ensure we are able to effectively test and contact students, all students are requested to provide their consent through the below online form. Please ensure you are logged in via your BDC student email to view, complete and submit the below.

    BDC COVID-19 Testing Consent Form
  • What if I test positive?
Please notify our college via email at with your student ID number, course and campus, a copy of your test result and if you have symptoms, the date that they started. If you are able to continue with your online learning, please do so whilst following the guidance provided with your test result to self-isolate.

COVID Safety Procedures and Facilities

  • How is the college enforcing mask wearing?
There are posters and notices across all campuses informing all campus users that they must wear a face covering properly, covering their nose and mouth. Staff have been asked to enforce mask wearing. Any student who refuses to wear a face cover on campus will be referred for disciplinary action.
  • What has changed on-campus to keep students safe?
    • One-way Systems and Procedures
To minimise interaction between groups, students will be asked to use specific entrances and exits, follow directional arrows for traffic flow around buildings and stay in the same group/rooms wherever possible
    • Minimised Student Movements and Study Bubbles
To reduce their potential exposure, students have been placed into study bubbles which aim to minimise contact between study groups.
    • COVID Code of Conduct
We have implemented BDC’s COVID Code of Conduct as of 15 June 2020 and have been strictly enforcing this code. Any students that are found to have breached this code will be immediately asked to leave and face further disciplinary action.
    • ‘Returning to College’ Student Guide
To assist students in safely returning to and learning at BDC, we have developed a simple guide which covers key advice and changes that have been made at the college.
  • Are college facilities open?
In line with the latest government advice, our college is currently providing remote online learning in place of in-classroom learning and is only open to students that have planned exams in January or vulnerable learners requiring face to face learning.

As a result, all college facilities are currently closed including but not limited to all café and canteen facilities, all sports and fitness facilities, all hair & beauty services and the Learning Resource Centre (LRC).
